Mrs. Cates was born October 23, 1947 in Heard County to the late William Cephus Shelnutt and Etta Sophronie Williamson Shelnutt. She was a member of Centralhatchee Parkway Baptist Church.
For many years she was a familiar face at Franklin Pharmacy where she worked as a sales clerk. Countless customers went to the pharmacy needing medicine for themselves or family members during an illness. She always greeted them with a smile and a kind word of encouragement.
It was her personality that made her a perfect fit for customer service. She never met a stranger and made friends wherever she went. She had a mischievous side and loved to play jokes and pranks on others.
Her personal appearance was very important to her. She had her eye liner tattooed on some years ago, and liked to mention it to anyone who complimented her on her make-up.
At home, she loved to cook and have all of the family over for a hot meal. She was particularly proud of her fried pies. This stoked a rivalry between herself and her sisters, Mamie and Martha Ann, who all believed that their pies were the prettiest and best tasting.
In her free time she enjoyed watching western movies and working in her garden. She always had a large spread of vegetables and flowers.
She held a special place in her heart for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: one daughter, Sandy Barber (Mark) of Franklin; three sons: Johnny Brewer (Keli), Scotty Brewer (Angie), and Kenny Brewer (Christy) all of Franklin; five grandchildren: Nikki Horne (Chris), Meghan Webb (Shawn), Austin Brewer (Katie), Hunter Brewer, and Will Brewer; three great-grandchildren: Potter Horne, Knox Webb, and Blakely Brewer; three sisters: Ezell Smith of Newnan, Mamie Paschal of Franklin, and Martha Ann Hale of Franklin; two brothers: Tom Shelnutt of Franklin and Odell Shelnutt (Lemyin) of Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three husbands: Frank Brewer, John Hardy, and Larry Cates; and two brothers: George Shelnutt and Eugene Shelnutt.
