Mrs. Kitchens was born August 14, 1937 in Randolph County, AL to the late Joseph Thompson Hornsby and Essie Susie Gillespie Hornsby.
A Baptist by faith, she enjoyed listening to Gospel music. One of her favorite evangelists was Dr. Charles Stanley.
She was an excellent cook and was especially skilled at baking cakes. She worked for several years in the lunchroom at Centralhatchee Elementary School. Afterward she became the head cook at the Heard County Senior Center, from where she retired after more than 20 years of service.

She held a special place in her heart for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sunday meals with everyone at the house were a treasured tradition. She had an extended family of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
